Asking My Subconscious A Question In A Lucid Dream

by Sarah
(Essex)

Before I went to bed, I had planned to ask the characters in my dreams questions since I see them as my subconscious and wanted truthful answers. So I focused on my wish to have a lucid dream at 6.00am after my alarm woke me up and then went back to sleep again.

My dream started out as a normal dream and not lucid. I found myself at the seafront. After a while I started to think "am I dreaming?" I did the reality checks that I have practised in real life. I kept checking my hands, but they stayed the same and I started to doubt whether it was a dream because it felt so real. I then searched the scenery for clues that I was dreaming. I was looking out for anything strange. I noticed sparky things falling into the sea and then I said "Aha, I'm dreaming." I also tested the temp of the water. Because if it was freezing then I knew it would be real. It felt cool and my clothes didn't get wet. Two characters a man and a woman appeared so I said "shall we swim?" They started to swim and I was suddenly propelled into the air, I was flying over the sea by a gust of wind.

I was lucid but I hadn't planned this to happen, but I enjoyed the ride anyway. After a while I tried to turn back and fly to shore, but I lost control. I was still lucid, but I haven't mastered control over some actions yet in my lucid dreams. I fell with a splash into the water and kept sinking until my foot hit the seabed and I kicked upwards. I resurfaced laughing and the man and woman swam over to me asking if I was ok. I said yes and told them to swim back to shore. Once on the shore, I decided I wanted to ask the woman a question because I knew she was my subconscious. I asked "What do you think of me?" She replied, "I think you are beautiful." That surprised me because I'm not a vain person and would never say that about myself. I then asked the woman if I could hug her. She started to fade away and when I tried to hug her she turned into a man in his twenties who backed away and laughed with his mates who were around him. He looked embarrassed and put out.

I then started losing control of my lucidity and it turned into a normal non lucid dream. I woke up very happy that I had managed to ask my fictional subconscious character a question. But I'm left unsure as to weather my subconscious was really trying to give me a message to love and accept myself. Something I have been trying to do lately.

what's there to be unsure of... NEW
by: Dream-e

The best way to tell if something is your (true) subconscious (i.e. not your own ego-mind messing with you) is to see how strong do you identify with it or how well it describes your own life as you experience it.

When the woman says you are beautiful you say:
"That surprised me because I'm not a vain person and would never say that about myself."

Obviously, not your conscious identity. :)
So you are safe there, it was your subconscious, but there is more there by you saying what you said.

You see, the more we repress things about ourselves the more they take over us subconsciously. So the more "not vain" you are trying to be consciously, the more vain you will actually act unconsciously (and then your mind will justify it in one way or another so that it doesn't make you look vain in your own eyes)

The key to this apparent paradox is to accept, transform, and embrace that which your conscious mind says "I am nothing like it"
i.e. be less judgmental, acknowledge that we all could be seen just a little bit vain sometimes, in the end it is mostly a label that people more or less arbitrarily throw at each other based on their own subjective idea of what and in what measure qualifies for that label.
i.e. if they have a hard time loving themselves, they will label vain any single person who loves and accepts themselves more than they do.

If you are human, you have at least a little bit of something that could be called vanity by others, but since we know that is not actual vanity, then what could it be, what aspect of you could it represent?

The answer is again in your own words:
"But I'm left unsure as to weather my subconscious was really trying to give me a message to love and accept myself. Something I have been trying to do lately. "

Of course the message is you need and to love and accept yourself, but you have doubts because you also have been programmed to think of this as vanity.
Don't worry, we've all been seriously messed up by the patriarchal culture for the last few thousand years. You see you cannot be dominated if you know, accept, and trust yourself, your own inner authority.

******* The actually important part:
To love and accept yourself, start by loving and accepting your "vanity". Which we we all know you are not really vain, but by accepting it, you take the stigma off of it, and let the energy flow - yes the energy of love and self acceptance.
**********************************

Once it flows you can transform and redirect it into positive ways.
e.g. start the "We are beautiful- meetup", to help others that are struggling to accept themselves. Start each meeting with: - Hi, I am so and so, and I am beautiful. - Hello so and so, you are beautiful.

haha, anyway, you got the the idea ;)

If you still don't think there's a bit of (healthy) vanity in you, just have a look at the following sentences, and let me know who sounds more vain:

Person 1: - I am beautiful

Person 2: - I am not a vain person

Cheers

losing control NEW
by: Mel

You were flying and free, but you lost control. You may fear that if you delve deeper into your subconscious (after all, you did know you were dreaming, i.e. it was a lucid dream), it will take over.

I suggest a meditation each night about how your subconscious IS a part of you and works along WITH your conscious. Neither can "take over" you; they are both you.

You know, I once had a lucid dream that I was in the kitchen w\ my mom. I wanted to experiment. so I said to her, "you know your just a dream, your not real". but she stared at me like I was crazy. then I said, "you're going to disappear" and I started to fade away. As I lost my lucidity, I screamed. The End. Dream characters are so weird.
