I Can Fall Asleep, But I Rarely Feel Like I Slept

Hi, I'm Scott. I'm 16 years old. I sometimes have problems sleeping, mostly falling asleep, but once I do, I sleep like a log.

My problem so far has mostly been getting sleep that makes me feel rested. When i wake up in the morning, at any time mind you, i feel groggy, tired, and still want to go to sleep, even if it isn't even technically morning! I think it is starting to cut in to my health. I am underweight, and short. I think these may be fixed in time, but i am not quite sure.

Anyways, i was wondering if there was any way i would be able to get to sleep and still feel rested. I am only a teen mind you, so anything costing above the $20 price range is out of the question. If anyone has any kind of ideas on the subject, that would be absolutely fantastic. Thanks for reading and responding!

Kevin: Hey Scott, if you're sleeping and waking up not feeling refreshed there are essentially two possible culprits: the QUANTITY of your sleep or the QUALITY of your sleep.

QUANTITY: If the issue is solely quantity, you could be operating with a large sleep debt. Even if you're sleeping what you feel to be a lot of hours now, this sleep debt could be built up from the past and large enough to still make you feel non-refreshed even after a full night's sleep. To learn about sleep debt, visit this page.

QUALITY: From your description it could be possible also that the quality of your sleep is being compromised, from a sleep disorder for example. One of the most common culprits in sleep quality compromising is sleep apnea, a sleep disorder that essentially fragments your sleep by causing you hundreds of little micro-awakenings throughout the night that you have no recollection for upon awakening. This can make an 8 hour night sleeping in bed feel like a 2 hour sleep. For more on sleep apnea, visit this page. Or learn about other sleep disorders here.

All the best,
Kevin

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3). It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
