I Sleep From 2-4am and 11-3pm

by Jesus
(Houston, TX)

I want to cure this so bad.

Kevin's Answer

Ah, the segmented sleep schedule that's even more unorthodox than the typical delayed sleep phase syndrome.

If you'd like to change this so that you are sleeping continuously throughout the nighttime, first it would likely make it easier if you could shift your start time (currently 2 am) to an earlier time in the night. Bright light therapy and even sleeping pills if you so choose can be effective in doing that. You can read more about those treatments for delayed sleep phase syndrome here.

If you can get your sleep time shifted earlier it will likely be easier to then influence your clock dependent alerting in a way where it does not wake you in the middle of the night anymore.

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3). It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
