Jaws of Life?

by Amy
(Proctor, MN)

Hello,

I have sleep apnea, alpha intrusion and bruxism. I am very attractive when I go to sleep. CPAP mask and the NTI bite plate from the dentist – and I am ready for bed.

The NTI bite plate is a polycarbonate, a solid and “strong” plastic. I have been using it for 2 years and on my 3rd replacement for cracking them. My dentist was baffled and surprised at how strong I grind at night. Nevertheless, it has worked in the sense, my husband can sleep better because he cannot hear me grind my teeth, but I still have a sore jaw and do not feel rested.

Maybe, I ate too many jaw breakers as a child…

Amy:
I can relate. My husband and I look like a cute couple with our CPAP full face masks (my strap is pink) and my eye mask to keep any residual light from waking me up. I as well am still tired despite all this. Sometimes it is not just one or two things, but many strategies are part of the solution. For me it is also regular (every day) exercise and better sleep habits, which I have not quite got there with. All I can do is keep trying.

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3) that isn't talked about enough. It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
