My Daughter's Sleep Deprivation And Destructive Behavior

by Jessica
(North Carolina)

My daughter is 5 years old, but the problem started when she was 4. She does not sleep at night, and gets into everything. She has totally emptied out my kitchen on numerous occasions. She opens anything she can and pours it in the floor.

Recently I've been having trouble keeping her in the house at night. We are currently trying to find a door lock she cannot open.

When she does sleep it is impossible to wake her up. I have gotten her on schedule many times, but it will only last for about about a week or two and she is back to the same old routine. She will sleep from 2 to 10 hours, it just depends on her I guess.

I am lost at what to do, but have three other children and am just too worn out to keep staying up with her. I have really been considering taking her to a specialist. Is anyone else having a problems similar to this?

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3). It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
