Running Startled - Brother With Night Terror

by Kaylee
(Boston, MA)

I haven't experienced having a night terror before, but my older brother has, on several occasions. Of course, I wouldn't be awake at the time, but when I hear his screams I would check on him.

My eldest brother "Jay" and I were awake at one time, when our other brother "Ron" had experienced his first night terror. At the time, our parents were away and wouldn't be home until early morning. We were both in the kitchen when we had heard him start to scream. "Jay" and I ran to the kitchen doorway to see our brother run out of his room, continuously screaming. We tried calling out to him, which made him run in our direction. He was unaware of his surroundings, and actually few down the set of stairs that led to the kitchen.

"Jay" and I ran over to "Ron". Because "Jay" and I were startled, we didn't know what was going on. "Ron" had woken up as soon as we grabbed hold of him. I had asked him why he was screaming and he said he didn't recall screaming at all. "Jay" had given him an odd look before saying that "Ron" had run down the hall. But "Ron" doesn't remember screaming, but he does remember running. He said he was running in his sleep, but he was unaware he was running in reality.

"Jay" and I decided it would be better if he slept in "Jay's" room for the night, so we could keep an eye on him. When our parents had come home the next day, we had told them what had happened.

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3) that isn't talked about enough. It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
