Sleeping Pills Are a Woman's Best Friend

This article points out that women are the targeted demographic of sleeping pills. Though it’s not exactly an informative piece, it still stresses a health-related issue that requires more attention and awareness. One of the more shocking facts presented in the reading is how women are twice as likely to take sleeping pills as men. Already it can be inferred that women, according to this article, generally have more trouble sleeping than men do. While this article doesn’t necessarily resolve any sleep-deprivation issues, it does address the problems that many women, specifically mothers, face every day when trying to go to sleep.

An important question that needs to be raised is ‘why are women more apt to use sleeping pills?’ According to the reading, women have plenty of events and thoughts that are just racing through their minds. A mother, for instance, especially plays a vital role in this demographic because they tend to be the ones in the household that care for the house, children, and daily errands. And because of this, before their sleep they feel more inclined to plan ahead as a means of preparing for all the responsibilities laid on their shoulders the next day. This planning not only takes time away from sleep they could be getting but also induces a great amount of stress because of the acknowledgment of the restless day ahead of them. The role of technology plays a big role as a factor of sleep deprivation as well because, for example, as soon as we see a light that shines from out phones, we are inclined to check it, therefore interrupting our sleep. I find it interesting how many mothers idolize 3 AM because it’s the time of the day that they can have to themselves and relax. Personally, I consider it a little ironic because despite the fact that they have a little stress-relieved moment at this hour, they still lose a generous amount of sleep, which could eventually build stress.

The best way to utilize this article is to build awareness on the effects of sleep-deprivation and especially understand the many factors that could contribute to such an issue. And maybe by avoiding these issues, women can be on their way to a healthier night of sleep to function at their optimal alertness the next day.
