Sleepwalking Science Project Ideas

by Archie
(New Zealand)

Hi,

I am ten years old from New Zealand and I sleepwalk. I would like to do my school science project on sleepwalking but I am struggling to find a research question that I can investigate (and ideally collect data on). I have enjoyed reading your website and I wonder whether you have any ideas that you could share please.

Archie

Kevin: Hi Archie, thanks for writing in. I love science projects. Maybe your research question could focus on things you do during the day, or especially right before you go to sleep, that influence whether or not you sleepwalk at night.

For instance, does drinking a whole glass of water right before bed make you more or less likely to sleepwalk? Does doing 50 jumping jacks before bed make you more or less likely to sleepwalk?

You could first start with a baseline week where you see how many times you sleepwalk when conditions are normal, and then introduce one of these new events (the water and jumping jacks, for instance) each experimental week after that. Then compare how many times you sleepwalk during the experimental weeks with the baseline week, and you've got yourself a science experiment.

Anyone else have any sleepwalking science project ideas for Archie? Share them with the comments link below.

Feel free to let me know how your project goes!

Warmly,
Kevin

A Note On Visitor-Submitted Questions:

Publishing sleep stories and questions from our visitors is meant to create a forum for open and proactive dialogue about an extremely important portion of our lives (one that occupies 1/3 of it and affects the other 2/3). It is not meant to substitute a trip to the doctor or the advice of a specialist. It's good to talk; it is not good to avoid consulting someone who's profession it is to help you with this kind of stuff.

If you are in any way concerned about your sleep health, don't wait for an answer on here, and don't necessarily rely on them. See a sleep specialist in your area as soon as possible.
