We have reduced our average sleep time by 20 percent

In the past century humans have reduced our average time spent asleep by 20 percent. What are some of the societal changes and changes in individual lifestyles that have encouraged wakefulness and discouraged sleep, in particular over the past 20 years?

Cause of sleep deprivation

The advent of the internet. People stay up later because the internet holds their attention.
The rising popularity of television keeps more and more people up later, especially because the �adult� shows are on later.

Caffeine- with the growing popularity of cafes (Starbucks is open until 11), and high energy drinks (Monster, Red Bull), people have ingested more and more caffeine to keep themselves awake longer.

The party lifestyle- With the growing popularity of clubs, nightspots, and all night parties, adolescents to young adults are painstakingly forfeiting their sleep time for long nights of fun and social mingling.

Rising drug use- Drug use has grown considerably, and there is a huge correlation between this disturbing trend and sleep deprivation. Especially with the high use nowadays of stimulants such as ecstasy and cocaine.
